Title: DE Compressions struts and Diagonal Braces
Post by: ParQld on October 31, 2015, 07:18:40 PM
Just a little confused about the location of the compression strut location for the Double Eagle

Compression struts
On P30 of the plans the upper compression struts run between the rear of the web faces under the spar caps and the lower Strut between the Spar cap itself. Correct? I assume this is the same for all stations except station 1 as illustrated by the update requiring them at rib #1. At this station they both run between the spar caps by the look of it.

Diagonal Braces,
these seem to run between the top of the lower spar cap at the intersection of the rib and intercostal to the top of the opposing cap so that the end of the strut touches the back of each web face and to the intercostal of the rib and spar. These seem the same for all stations except location 1 as per the update.

The only reason I ask is that the plans indicate one thing and the video i got shows compression struts in different locations across the wing. I suspect this is because the video relates to a smaller eagle as the wing attach fittings are not the same as the DE.

any help appreciated.

regards Paul

I have notice some differences in the video and the plans then realized the videos are for the Legal Eagle, and although the build techniques are the same there are some differences you will see from the plans, in my case the Legal Eagle XL.

Paul are you inserting the word "intercostal" to mean the vertical spar stiffener pieces?
And while I don't know for the DE, the general timing for the build would be diagonals first, compression second.
Raking and fitting required all the while maintaining your "square" and rib placements.

Hey Scott,

Paul are you inserting the word "intercostal" to mean the vertical spar stiffener pieces?  - Yes that is what i have called them (the one between the top and bottom spar caps)
And while I don't know for the DE, the general timing for the build would be diagonals first, compression second.
Raking and fitting required all the while maintaining your "square" and rib placements.

Agree with your comments but not sure about this. I have not seen the plans for other Legal Eagles but the DE lower Compression struts run between the faces of the spar caps. If you install the compression struts first then the diagonal rests on top of the compression strut and provides an additional bonding surface (apart from the triangle blocks and ply caps). If you glue the the diagonal on first then epoxy from the join can ooze underneath and the bond may not be that good. I am of the understanding that even when the compression struts are glued then the wing can still flex enough to get the diagonals in. Happy for anyone to shoot holes in that argument :). I maybe over analyzing this.

thanks for your input always appreciated. such a great Forum this.

cheers Paul
