what's the advantage of using a different wing on an xl fuselage
-
I will take a swing at that pitch.
Specific examples of alternate wings would make for a better answer. But without I will make a general comment.
I think the most common reason for alternate wings is the builder already had a set or could get a set.
Perhaps someone thinks they can improve on the plans wing. Most everything can be improved.
I have not heard of an improved version. But it would require you fly the plans wing and the improved wing to know for sure.

by no amount; not at all.
... unless you already own a pair of other wings. But that would be a personal advantage, not an inherent advantage.

To further Tom's comment.
To compare apples to Apples, need fly the plans wing and improved wings, on the same day...same conditions, same person.. so many details.
Otherwise, you only have the viewpoint of one person, for that one plane, on each particular day. Toss in the mathematical variables and it gets complicated.
All this (changes) gets shrunk tremendously at 60 mph. Take a 1% improvement on a 60 vs 200 mph aircraft. .6 vs 2 mph or a 333% difference... but both 1% gain based on known facts of baseline speed.

It all depends on what the objective is? What tradeoffs are you wanting to make differently?
These are slow speed and low power craft and have a wing design to work well with that tradeoff.
