Title: Should I buy the XL plans as well as the LE ?
Post by: Sean T on March 18, 2016, 09:00:11 PM
HI
I recently purchased the LE plans and have been studying them as well as lots of reading and video on line. I have read that the XL is not just a larger version of the LE but has had some design changes ((improvements)wing mounts for instance). Naturally I am curious as to what changes have been made and should/could they be incorporated into the LE or should I reconsider and build the XL as it is the more refined design. I am 5'6" and 150lbs so initially the LE seemed like a good fit, but at the moment I just dont feel like I know which one to build.
Any thoughts?
Thanks
Sean

Hi Sean. The LEXL has a higher gross capability because it has a larger wing and is wider than the LE for a pilot that can weigh up to 275 pounds. If you ever want to sell it, it would appeal to more people. Jim Wright is about your size I think and he choose the LEXL. Both planes would fit you well. I am building the XL because I am 5-11 and 230lbs. In my appinion there is nothing wrong with the LE. There have been some refinments over the years, but there have been many of them built and flying. Joe Spencer has many videos of his and he has been flying it for over 10 years I think. You can't go wrong with either one. If it were me, I would find someone near me that has a LEXL and go look at it before I decided. Hope this helps a little.

Sean,

I am 5'8" and 170 lbs. soak and wet. I bought the LE which has a 20 inch wide fuselage. I figure this is perfect for me. If I wanted to add an inch or two to the width during the build, I could probably do that with no worries. If you want to see what that feels like, sit in a chair and use a tape measure to see what 20 inches wide looks/feels like.  As others have said, if you need to place the overhead tubing an inch or two higher for better head room, you could probably do that too.
I am reasonably confident in the choice I made. I hope this helps as you evaluate your choices.

Vince

If I were you I would pick up the phone and call Leonard.  He hates to type...

Who knows, you might be able to work a deal on 2 sets of plans since you only want to build one plane...
