Title: EAA Air Venture 2016
Post by: Hugh Sistrunk on June 09, 2016, 09:19:13 PM
Just seeing if there has been a call out for those planning to attend AV2016... maybe I missed it.  If so, I will chase it down in the archives.

Hugh, I guess this is the call out.

I'll be there, in the Ultralight area.

Ok, this is my first time up that way - so I have been picking Hardy's brain for info.  He has shown me the loop at the Northeast end of the UL Runway - so I will head in that direction.

Unless I have been turned around for years, With the lay of the UL runway, the north end would be more west than anything, And by loop, are you meaning the walk path around the west end? Which is closed during flight operations of the runway (so it seemed in the past)

And lastly does, does this loop have connections to a Eagle group gathering? Am curious.

The Twin Pines dining hall has been offered many times for use in the evening, for the Eagles group, to which I don't think it has ever been used as a gathering point. Pretty close and handy I'm thinking. But I have never made it yet, do to last minute call outs for a gathering place...after I had made other plans.  Maybe this year different?

UL runway runs NW and SE.  Don't rightly know, but guess the headings to be 330 and 150 degrees...

Concrete runway is OSH 36L.

Red arrow points to Ultralight Barn.

Hugh, the red barn will get you in the vicinity. There will be some tents near the barn used for lectures ect pertaining to the ultra lights. check the schedule usually some eagle or 1/2 VW stuff. The faithfull will be there during the talks.
There will be a lineup of eagles. since you have had your compass tutorial; that will be east of the barn. you will find them. Ultra lights fly 9-11:30 in the morning and again 6:30 to 7:30 in the evening. All pilots flying out of "The Farm" must attend a breifing just before flight time. Your pilots will be there in the morning.

As you have not been to Oshkosh I will sum it up in one word. Enormous. There is much to see and learn. The site is large. Absolutlely learn the tram routes. Ride them. will save your feet and legs and they are covered so relief from the sun as well. Airfield are not known for shade-sunblockers and a protective hat are good ideas.

Where you stay is up to you. I usually camp on site.  You do need one EAA member to camp on EAA grounds. The eaa campsite has flushing toilets , sinks showers (stalls even). there are also temp grocery stores.  My only compaint is my backpackers tent. I am growing tired of crawly in and out. Would like the dignity of bi-pedal locomotion.
There are school buses that travel as well. The trams on the show site the buses out side of show site. Campground , museum , pioneer field . Park your vehicle at your campground and forget it. ( exception- it is easy to drain your battery, cables jumper or run it midweek )

6 weeks to go-there will be a lot more information coming. Trade a few phone numbers.
I am on the fence. Have not been there in five years.

All Good Info Tom,
Your dead on about no shade at the airfields - So sunblock will be a must for sure - I found me a person renting out rooms so will be able to walk upright for that  ( I think, site unseen :-)....
Hey Scott, after Dan sending the pic showing the barn, I was talking about the 'loop or U'ee looking road or path, can't tell what it is from google earth - It is between the end of the runway and the barn..
And Tom, seems from past years there is generally at least one rain storm that comes in, has that been your experience?

Take one of those compact pocket rain poncho's for every day you plan to be on the grounds and a second pair of shoes so one pair can be drying out - how do I know that?... Tank up on water - it can be over the top hot...

One of these things at a better price take the load off tired feet while you wait for a people tram: https://amzn.com/B016E3P54W  (https://amzn.com/B016E3P54W)

Just an educated guess - this maybe the year the e-bike dominates the (to-die-for) way to get around the campus... The challenge of that is a genius arrangement to recharge the battery... Hey, that might be a concession, shorepower...

At one point in the single digit years the John Deere Green Machines were so thick you could have gone unnoticed in the pack - I'm sure some high rollers were doing just that...

Leonard for many years had a Volunteer's Parking pass that did not have a date on it until the parking lot was eaten by progress...

The best parking for me arriving daily by car was the private lot right at the west end of the UL runway - I think the week pass was $10 a day in 2014... Traffic is light if you approach from the south on I-41 or SR-26, get off east bound at that intersection and then immediately north on the surface road to the airfield... It leads you directly to the parking and camping favored by our UL folk...

Here are some of the "cane seats".  A lot cheaper without the school logo...

I searched for "stool cane" (https://www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_sb_ss_c_0_10?url=search-alias%3Daps&field-keywords=stool+cane&sprefix=stool+cane%2Csporting%2C264) probably not the best search term.  Golf fans use these a lot.

I'll be toting one of these this year. I'm tired of sitting on the grass.

The Q/A reported 2 lb weight is very attractive - difficult assembly not so much but :emoji_u1f61c:

Ok. Who wants to have a gathering? Do we need a separate topic for this? My Monday and Tuesday evening is already full.

I am game for a flocking of the Eagles, not sure enough are going to be more than a small gaggle...

I plan to attend the first half of the week.  So, if anyone is counting, add two or three more to any gathering that is planned.

I'll be attending for the first time.  Mon-Thurs.  Can't wait to see some eagles up close. Flying (commercial) into MKE and renting a car.  Staying at the U. Wisconsin at Oshkosh.  NON-A/C room. Any suggestions on things I might need to pick up on the drive up to the University?  Some say the NON-A/C rooms can get hot.  Maybe pick up a fan?  That portable ultralight folding chair that was posted looks like a good idea.

Not sure what to expect, just looking forward to a week of aviation!

Hey @914pete, I stayed at the Uni in 2014, great venue with a ton of like minded people. It is pretty basic accommodation, but thats all you need after a day of foot slogging. when you turn the lights out it all looks the same :). It does get a bit warm so if you can grab a fan from somewhere that would be a good idea.  I traveled from Australia so next time i will order a cheap fan from Amazon and have it delivered prior and than maybe donate it to charity on departure.

There is no TV in the room but they have good Wifi.

Have fun, i hope to be back next year

I am flying my XL over from Sheboygan ,which is 50 miles east of OSH.  I have a total of 6 hours right now, most bugs worked out.  I hope a lot of planes make it. I will be there all week.  I am flying like nuts to get better at spot landings. Really having fun!!

I plan on flying over the week before the show and hangering in a friends hanger until I get there Monday. I will be there all week, and flt home Sunday evening weather permitting. I live an hour away so not a big deal for me. My biggest hurtle is feeling confident behind the stick ,and getting all my bugs out by then...

It will be interesting to see if they let me fly over to join the UL pattern or taxi all the way from the North end of OSH to the Red Barn!!

Does anyone have a website or phone no. For Relleumtdat Campground. Do they take reservations or is it private camping. Thanks, Brad V.

Ed Stadtmueller, 3673 Waupun Rd, phone 920-235-5702.  There is absolutely no need to call they never run out of space.  They own all the way to U.S. 41.

It is strictly first come first served.  The only bum rush is for the campsites nearest the road.  However many of them are way too close to the porta Johns...

If you are tent camping, there is a fence row I like several rows back, that is near enough to the porta potties and affords extra safety from being run over in your sleep.   Bring ear plugs...  People sit up and talk, and run generators.
