Title: What is this in place of the Distributor.
Post by: joecnc2006 on September 28, 2016, 07:16:24 PM
I was looking and a picture of what i think is a Hummel engine. and at the distributor port there is what looks like an RPM effect sensor? or is it something else.

but the engine has a mag in the back of it. the spark plug wires comes from the mag.

a close up.

Perhaps they are trying to cut the weight of the mag, and just don't have all the work done yet...

Beats me.  What does the lettering on it say?

That's a dual ignition setup... GPAS and Casler sell them...

Yup you are correct I found it earlier, they are a little pricy but may still look into it. anyone have experience with it.

There is a simple way of getting quasi dual ignition that we used years ago on Subaru engines and also on a Corvair conversion. Given that you have faith that the distributor shaft is quite unlikely to stop turning in flight, you can mount two Mitsubishi ignition modules on a new plate ( replaces the original points plate )  built into a stock mechanical advance distributor. The setup could be arranged to set off two waste fire coil boosted sparks to an upper and lower set of plugs. Here's a pic of two Mits modules in a Corvair distributor. I cut down a Ford 6 cyl reluctor  to trigger the modules. We did this earlier with a Subaru distributor which is considerably smaller than the Corvair dizzy and it could be made to fit too.

A good thing to use a "grub screw" anchor to lock the initial timing on the 009 distr as seen here: http://www.eaglersnest.com/forum/index.php?topic=53.msg584#msg584 (http://www.eaglersnest.com/forum/index.php?topic=53.msg584#msg584)
