Plans show drilling 3inch holes in spar web. Is this for weight savings or strength? Just wondering.

This would be for weight savings, or perhaps better said, it does not effect the strength of the spar caps (top and bottom) Similar to the tapering of caps on the XL plans, though most don't do it, it is again for weight savings as the ends of spars are OK, without full CAP

Thanks for the reply Scott

Don't skip the holes,
they may have an important function with condensation.
Also, check your nose rib drawing. A slight drain is eased into the bottom on my XL drawings

Good point on the condensation. I always build per plans but was concerned about strength. Condensation could be a problem without some ventilation in wing. I built a loehle 51/51 and had to dill 1/2in holes in wing spar. Thanks for your reply
