Title: Control Cables
Post by: rfeenstra on December 24, 2016, 07:11:13 PM
I have the wings off my DE, getting ready to rebuild the fuselage.  One thing that I've been watching since the last annual is wear on the control cables where they pass through the cub style cable guides.  I used stainless 3/32 7x19 since the 7x19 is more flexable and a tiny bit stronger.  However,  after taking the cable off the airplane,  I found a couple of spots where the aileron cables were frayed right at the cable guide.  I will be replacing the cable with 7x7 cable since it is less susceptible to abrasion.  Or maybe 7x19 1/8".  Something to be looking at!

Are your cable redirection angles within the limits as indicated in AC43-13 ?   I've seen some pictures on this site of cables in guides that are likely way over the limit. Are your cables "hardware store" aircraft cables or legit mil spec aircraft cables from a legit supplier ?

They are mil spec from aircraft spruce and the angle was VERY minimal, maybe 2 or 3 degrees.  The thing is, they were aileron cables that were out in the breeze on the rear strut. They were subject to the vibrations induced from the  air flow.

interesting!  It would be kinda cool if ya had a video of that area during a "typical" flight. I ASSUME , like any "flying" wire, that the harmonics/vibrations are the culprit(as you do). Do you think that one more cable guide would mitigate that condition? I would also go with the cable change you are talking about. wise move............ON ANOTHER THOUGHT.......Since every aircraft has a list of AD's(some extensive).........wouldnt it be prudent if this group started one? m talking about a SPECIFIC  place that we could go to any research issues found, such as this.........HMMMMM
