Title: Mechanical disc brakes source
Post by: Kevin N. on April 09, 2018, 11:04:10 AM
Howdy group,  I just bought some tuffy wheels from LEAF and would like to know the source of the mechanical disc brakes builders are using. I did a search and all the links for sources are turning up "not found"   My apologies if its on the forum and I missed it. If anybody is interested my XL plan set is serial # H-20 from Leonard last week. I'm taking over a project from my brothers estate but couldn't find his plans anywhere so I bought another set. Thanks. Kevin

Note: all bicycle brake calipers are of the same side orientation. What this means for repurposing on an aircraft is that the cable runs get weird from one side to the other.

So if you look instead at scooter (or possibly go-cart) brakes you may well be able to find LH/RH versions of the calipers that will work better on the aircraft application.

Here is an example from Ebay:

Looking to hear from anybody with experience with the newest mechanical bicycle disc brakes. Seems to be a lot if them, at all different prices. Looking for a good compromise between quality and cost. Saw some matching right and left units on Amazon, it didn’t say what they were made of. I think they are for cheap atvs. If I used the regular bike  calipers, can you just flip one around? Yeah I guess you would end up with funky cable runs. A pair of quality matching right and left units would be awesome.
The other question is what size rotor? Is 160 mm too small? 180 mm better? Maybe I should have started a new post? I read pages of old posts, and was hoping to get some updated information. Oh, I’m planning on toe brakes, and am not sure whether to use the mountain bike versions or the street ones. They have a different throw movement I think. Any takers?
