Title: Chevy rods on an 82 mm crank
Post by: gwjames on November 02, 2018, 12:43:26 PM
If you are using Chevy rods on a 82 mm crank what Chevy rod do you use. What Chevy engine would it be from....Part #?

Thanks, Greg

The rods are not chevy, the crank needs to have a chevy sized bigend journal grind( smaller od than vw, used to improve clearance with stroker cranks ) , the rods are aftermarket performance vw rods with chevy sized bigends and are available in several lengths and forging type, you need to know what you want for your engine configuration- bore -stroke, standard length cylinders-long cylinders, piston pin height etc

Stewart, thanks for the reply, never have done any VW engine work before, just in a information gathering stage at this point.

This thread maybe is a little old but the truth is timeless ;)
I don't think StewardC is right because i mounted a 86 mm stroker crank with chevy journals (50,8 instead 55 mm original VW) and, of course the chevy sized rods are narrower than the original VW, BUT and this is the interested point, the chevy rod outer half piece of the bigend is a lot narrower in hight than the original VW.
That means, it saves around 1.5 mm only at the half piece of bigend plus the 2.1 mm of radius from chevy 2 inch journal.
see here original VW: (https://www.bilder-upload.eu/thumb/e1ae50-1559510545.jpg) (https://www.bilder-upload.eu/bild-e1ae50-1559510545.jpg.html)

Hermann,
What I was saying is the stroker crank with chevy journals requires less crankcase clearanceing(grinding out metal) than the same stroker crank with std wv journals.
