Title: Interesting flat Verner 2 cyl for sale.....
Post by: Maxray on February 05, 2019, 10:35:59 PM
I just saw this engine for sale in the Los Angeles C.L. https://losangeles.craigslist.org/wst/avo/d/torrance-ultralight-engine-jvc-flat-twin/6803335461.html
Looks like a nice motor. I wonder if 40HP can be squeezed out of it?

While I have little doubt the 3, 5 and 7 cyl. motors are pretty good, Have you ever seen a good right up on this motor? Parts? More than a handful flying?  Those would be my first questions.  Nice look is one thing, but working and working well is most important. Parts follow right in there as a close second.
Just saying.

In my opinion, 7800 rpm is way too high for an airplane 4-stroke. Can only maintain for 3-minutes. Also website states only 26 hp at 6000 rpm continuous. Already has 11:1 compression ratio so I don't see what you could do to get 40 hp, even for takeoff, much less an extended climb. Engine looks great, and is very light, just don't know if I would trust a high-winder like this. If you could live with the 26 hp @ 6000, it might be an OK deal. Just noticed Wikipedia states engine no longer listed as available after 2015. They do not mention spare parts.

I would agree with the unique nature of the beast and its cousin the VM133 was as well.  http://www.vernermotor.com/old/indexc192.html?sec=3
We often talked about it, such as -"It should have been good"  Many of you remember, it being at OSH year after year, never once did I see one flying. Although it was on a airplane one year, but they never got it past making a lot of noise that I know of.  I don't mind to be corrected.  AS we all know, there are some real "good looking gems" that just never seem to make it.  Tried is one thing, proven is completely different in my book.   Thanks Maxray for photo of a interesting concept.
