How many have built a runway in the back yard? I live on a 10.5 acre piece of land that is just about square. i could get a 700 foot runway without having to move or tear down any existing structures. my land is pretty flat with a very gentle slope to it. Is 700 feet enough for an XL with 1/2 VW engine? I own a bulldozer with a 12 foot blade to make the actual building easy.

Thanks for the reply, Steve. Looks like my 700 feet would work fine. I have power lines at one end but nothing at the other end but woods. It may be possible to get the property owner to let me trim up some trees on that end. Looks like your dozer is a little newer than my 1961 D6B.

Fly the first 10 hours at a site with extra length and adequate off field landing spots... I flew off a drylake...

What is the field elevation? What hp engine? What do you weigh?

I am about 250' above sea level. I haven't built my LE yet. I am just starting to collect materials. I have plans and looking at engine variations now. I am 6'1" and about 255 but am losing weight and hoping to be down to near 200 by time I actually get it ready for air time. I have lost about 40 lbs this last year. Having to relearn how to eat properly as I become an old man-haha

As we get older we are at risk of metabolic syndrome (https://www.mayoclinic.org/diseases-conditions/metabolic-syndrome/symptoms-causes/syc-20351916)... I got the New Atkins book. Also got a high strung little dog that needs walks several times a day.
You either have to cut the carbs or count calories and exercise to beat it. Interwebs are vibrating with "low carb", "Keto", and "Paleo" diets and recipes.

Sounds like it will work with a higher hp 1/2 VW, a 37, 42 or 45 hp and a climb prop. I would go for a low spot in the trees/fence anything to make getting into and out of the field easier, especially on those hot summer days. Start off on a longer strip until you get familiar with flying and flying characteristics of the LE.
