Title: Mounting the Propeller
Post by: 914pete on March 13, 2020, 07:20:00 AM
I can't seem to post pictures for some reason. I get this: Your attachment has failed security checks and cannot be uploaded. Please consult the forum administrator. Anyway, I received my propeller from Frank at Performance propellers and had some specific questions regarding mounting it to my engine. The previous owner told me its a Scott Casler built 32hp cut case 1/2vw and was only test run. It came with 5/16" mounting bolts and a plate marked: FRONT 742 SS. I'd like to post a picture. I'm assuming its a counter weight? How does one determine where to mount it to the hub? It has two holes that match any 2 hub holes. Any pointers on mounting a propeller correctly would be greatly appreciated.

Try again...  It may have had something to do with the re-orientation mod recently added.

You are not using one of those nursing home phones are you..? (I-phone)

I'm rather certain the counter balance weight goes at 9 o'clock with the engine at TDC.

Some pointers on mounting wood props:  https://www.sensenich.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/01/Installation_Instructions_Wood_Aircraft_Installation_1452800693.pdf (https://www.sensenich.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/01/Installation_Instructions_Wood_Aircraft_Installation_1452800693.pdf)

Thanks for the prop installation info Dan. I'll try posting pics again. Franks workmanship is truly amazing. What a beautiful prop. What cylinder is #1 on a half vw?

Hi Dan. I got one picture to work. I tried several times to attach a picture of the counter weight. Using a Windows7 machine. Drag N drop, pulling the file etc. no luck. I never had trouble before.

Test pic attachments placed below by clicking on "attachments and other options"-> browse (browsing to the pic and clicking it and then clicking "open") then click "more attachments" and repeating the process.

Test post from laptop. One third Corvair, logged in as someone other than admin...

I really think this is on the user end, perhaps a virus or something else effecting the exif portion of the file triggering the forum software to reject the pic, like photoshop or some other photo processing software.

Really not able to determine if there is a ligit problem with the forum until someone else trys to post a pic.

I still can't post pics. Keep getting: Your attachment has failed security checks and cannot be uploaded. Please consult the forum administrator.

I've tried several things at my end including using different computers and my phone. I've tried resizing the pics, renaming etc. I've done virus scans on my laptop etc. Dan, do you think my account needs to be reset or something? I've never had issues in the past. My laptop is a Windows7 machine with virus software. Phone is a Samsung Note9. Both have always worked posting pics.

In the meantime, the AN bolts I received with the engine to mount a prop are too long for Franks prop. I assume stacking washers behind the elastic stop nut is not a good idea so Im going to buy new AN bolts and elastic lock nuts. The bolts I have have a drilled shank. When using elastic stop nuts, does the bolt have to be drilled for safety wire? If yes, is it be better to have the heads drilled? I don't get the shank drill on a prop bolt. After reading some of the info Dan sent regarding wood propellers, it seems your checking the torque on the prop bolts often anyway.

I would not think changes to your membership would help.  The only thing that has changed recently is the mod I added to rotate pics.

What I find baffling is, I can post pics and you cannot.  That is why I logged out as admin and logged back in as a regular member as part of my investigation.

This leads me to believe there is a setting in the mod that is affecting you.  Perhaps your camera was set for too large file size.

I changed those settings just now and will attempt to attach a screen shot of them.

BTW I have a Note 4 that is retired.  I cannot afford a note 9 or anything associated with Apple, so now have a Motorola 7 with Google Fi so my wife and I could have the same phone.

Thanks for your input on this problem and please don't give up trying to post pics.  I will keep at it until we figure out what is going on.

Try posting a pic i took and send with this old iPad. Can anyone identify the markings on the prop counter weight?

Yes, very clear.

Thanks, Charles. I'm curious what the markings actually mean?

On my counter balance weight the word "FRONT" indicates the direction of the plate (forward).  "SS"  could mean stainless steel.  742 could be the serial number of the crank.  Just some guesses.  Call Scott Casler at Hummel Engines (520-723-5283).

Theodore,

No it is not my Global.  Just photos of someone else's...

Here is a list of file types you can attach to your posts:  doc,gif,jpg,jpeg,mpg,mp4,mov,png,pdf,png,txt,zip,xls,dwg

The file size is limited to 2100 MB or approximately 2 gig.

The best way to send a video is upload it to the internet and copy/paste the URL in a post, it will play in the post.  Here is a list of video servers that work here that way.  (Buckle up.)
