Title: Workbench Width
Post by: RagingBladeAerials on July 03, 2021, 07:30:56 PM
:-\ Hi all! Just bought my plans for XL.  I've looked at a ton of posts and have seen several different versions of the workbench, overall width seems to be between 24" and 48".  Spoke with John B. and he recommended 24" wide x 14' long.  I have 2 x 16' Wooden I-Joists that I picked up for cheap on the local lumber yard and plan on using them topped with 3/4" ply on saw horses. What is the advantage of having a table wider than 24"? Thanks!

A place for a bench grinder and other handy nearby tools . . .

Thanks Steve, do you recommend a double tier set up with a 24" on top of the 48" slab (more lumber and more $$) or just a simple 48" wide bench?  Thanks again!

I went with a 36" wide by 14' long build table for my XL. Single layer of 3/4" radiata plywood. The fuselage is almost 25" wide (24" center-to-center) at the widest stations and I wanted room to have locating blocks screwed to the outside of the tubing. I also wanted room to put a spar on the table and add ribs behind it with plenty of support for the ribs.

I went with 32" wide X 14 feet for the same reasons as Keith.
