Title: Fuel System Options
Post by: Tubalcain on September 08, 2021, 02:35:26 PM
Hi Everyone, I am researching the fuel system and am seeing a lot of options both on this forum and on the net. The plans clearly call for a wing tank and I am leaning toward an aluminum riveted tank for ease of build and repair. I am not sure about folding wings yet as this may be to heavy an upgrade for me. I am however seeing a fuel tank mounted in the fuselage on some websites which makes sense to me if you want to fold the wings. Is this a mod on some aircraft or am I just looking at a header tank mounted in front of the instrument panel? Thanks.

Look at Les Homan's ORV XL on YouTube. He has built three, or more XL's, and built a fuselage mounted aluminum tank that sits in front of the instrument panel for most of them.

I have also seen a moto cross type fuel tank mounted above the rudder pedals in LE/XL size aircraft.  I may be able to locate pics if there is any interest.

Thanks Guys, I am not sure about the folding wing mod as it is sure to increase weight but I am going to have to trailer the aircraft in a covered trailer and not having to drain down a wing tank each time would be a big plus. The location behind the instrument panel would give it it's 6 inches of head pressure so that would probably work ok.

I am wondering what it does to the C of G moving the tank that far forward?

As far as I know the fuse fuel tank is not an official "option".  It's just something that some builders decided it worked better for them.
