Aerodux 500, it’s a bit messy and doesn’t smell great either. It seems to be the preferred choice here over T88.

Hi Gents, I should receive iron deigns plans today. I have searched and searched for a builders jig similar to this that I think I saw here. It used 1/4" delrin pieces held down with 3/16" bolts and wing nuts. I have a sheet of this delrin and surely the bolts would be a lot cheaper than these toggle hold downs. If anyone can remember where I can see this again I would greatly appreciate it. I have built two EABs. Just turned 75. Inspired by gentleman that bought plans for his 88 year old dad. Look in the projects area..Chucks XL in Indiana, I think. I'm on a very unfriendly tablet, and have a problem with copy and paste. At any rate, I'm sure this is what you are talking about.

Gents, I am finally starting the ribs. Been sanding 1/4" cap strips. Question, when I built my sonex, because of the thicker spar web at the root, I am pretty sure that the root rib was a little shorter than the others to maintain perfect alignment. Because of the 1/8" ply reinforcement on the rear of the spar at the root of the XL, why shouldn't the first two ribs be 1/8" shorter to stay in line?
I am probably missing something obvious. Thanks for replys.

Perhaps I misunderstand the question, but the ribs are all identical in overall dimension with the 1/8 inch "difference" at the root being accounted for by offsetting the vertical rib member at the point. (The offset is actually more than 1/8" to account for the 1/8" metal wing attach bracket which lays against the added 1/8" plywood you mention, for a total offset of 1/4 inch) Unless I misunderstand the question, in which case disregard the above....... ::)

Thanks for the reply. I guess I am just clouded today. If you offset the vertical 1/4" at the end of the rib and then don't you have to shorten the top and bottom cap strip the same amount? If you do that, then the rib is obviously shorter therefore all ribs are not the same dimension. I am not trying to be argumentative, I just want to understand.

From memory.. ::) there are only 4 "normal" ribs. At least that is with the Iron Design wing. You'll just have to modify each rib as necessary.

Thanks so much for the pic. Chuck. I have spent many hours studying your site. Have started taking notes on which page that I saw something that I wanted to remember. I guess my question is looking at your pic it seems clear to me that because of the 1/8" ply over the 3/4" filler that this rib must be at least 1/8" shorter. When and how many do I shorten. I would assume that there are at least two and maybe 4 to shorten. Thanks again. I am in West Tennessee and last month drove to AS in Peachtree city to avoid shipping on most hardware and wood.

Here are a couple of photos showing the 1st two ribs for each wing. I built the ribs to plans then added an extra 1/4x1/4 to the front vertical. I cut the front vertical back 1/8" to allow for the large ply doubler and extra notches for the wing fitting and its doubler. Also note you may need to make extra verticals at the rear spar opening for the 1st two ribs. Gotta fit them over the rear spar fittings, too. My wing fitting notches are deeper than plans show since I used 3/16" thick wing fitting material vs 1/8".

Outstanding! Makes total sense. Thanks so much for your help. Now I can start. 77 years of age. This will be my third. A minimax and then a sonex with the 2200 Jab. I had been thrown off by the statement that all ribs are the same length. It is wonderful to belong to a community that is willing to help one another. I am on old F-4 pilot. Spent 2.5 years in the PI accompanied. Missed Vietnam by two weeks.
