Hello Steve K,
I'm interested in hearing more about the plumber' tape on the oil reservoir. Often thought that insulating it would help maintain a high oil temperature. What it that exactly, etc.?

Following Leonard's winning lead on the 1/2 Vw short stacks from a Plumbing Supply I looked further there to solve more of the low oil temp problems.. To properly dry out the moisture/acid carrying vapors the oil temp should range between 180 & 200 F... My oil temp after break-in never went over 160 F... I have read that the VW Type 1 gets a lot of cooling from air blowing over the bottom of the engine case so I hung a 2" rounded aft piece of .025 6061-t6 from the lugs on the front of the case on the bottom... Didn't raise the oil temp much so I went back to the Plumbing Supply and got this material - Lowes/HomeD may have it too: http://www.lyncar.com/plumbing/index.php?main_page=product_info&products_id=1005 (http://www.lyncar.com/plumbing/index.php?main_page=product_info&products_id=1005) ... Using very wide area washers on 4 cooling tin lugs placed right across the whole bottom of the case fit snug... The temp went up to 180 F and I leave it on year around... I run 2 quarts of oil and a primed oil filter... I drop it off the attaches on one side to drain the oil...
