Title: Short Field Stuff It in/out
Post by: sonicapollo on February 10, 2015, 05:13:44 PM
What's the shortest field with the standard faa 50' obstacle (read: usual trees) that you guys are comfortable stuffing a DE in/out on a standard day?

(Solo or at gross.)

I have a 1400' field with 50' trees on either side.  I don't if that is long enough for takeoff.  I think I should be able to clear that by 1000' down, but that's just a rough interpolation/swag.

Obviously this would be for a well sorted DE.  I guess knowing what prop/engine would also be useful.

We operate DE Stubby from a 1700' grass field, with trees at one end, wires at the other.  Plenty of room.  I have operated from a 1400' runway, no obstacles at ether end, again, plenty of room.  Even with obstacles, would not be a problem.  With favorable conditions, much shorter runways would probably be useable.

And, this experience was with a non-optimal prop.  Our new Performance Prop should make take-offs less critical.

And, so far, all flying was with one person in the airplane.  Haven't flown a passenger, yet.

I'm thinking of puttin on the 2276cc great plains setup, maybe with a flywheel drive.  I think maybe I'm worrying over nothing.
