Bobby, looks like you don't live too far from me. Might be fun to visit some time.

Recently, I upgraded my iPad Mini to a Pixel 9Pro-Fold.  Turns out the unfolded screen is almost the same size as the iPad and is crisper.  Here is a picture of the SimpleFly (My normal app is iFlyGPS) on this phone.  What was nice to discover is the app will auto size from the main front screen to the interior unfolded screen without restarting.  Something IflyGPS can't do.

Also, looks like you are using the QuadLock mounting system - good stuff.

Hello there, I do have the plans for the DE, but I've several questions despite that.

By how much could I widen up the cockpit to make two of my size fit 6'6" 260lbs?

Could the wingattachement being raised by 3", to get some more headroom?

The landing gear, id like to go from less than nice surface strips, so could the shockabsorber for the landing gear being attached to the crosstube where the instrument panel is attached, in design like the RAGWING RW19 or Pilatus PC6?!

Love that APP!  Thanks!  What IDE and language?  And where did you learn to code it?

DAMiller,

You asked about how I did my tank... hijacking my avionics SimpleFly thread.  ::)

Looking on my build log, I did not make a single note about it! So...

My Legal Eagle tank is aluminum, five gallons, in the left wing per plans. It was fabricated out of 0.050" 5052 and was TIG welded. The filler is a billet weld-on bung and cap. Amazon, Summit Racing, not sure. For a vent I simply drilled a small hole in the cap. I fabricated a small sump (maybe 2"x2"x2") near the rear of the tank which extends down below the bottom surface of the wing. You might be able to see it in one of the pictures. On the bottom of the sump is a drain plug, and on the side of the sump, running horizontal and forward, is a 1/4 turn valve with an AN fitting. Aluminum fuel tubing down to the engine held along the fuselage tubes with Adel clamps.

The total weight of the tank was 3.3 pounds (I individually weighed everything on this build, I am detailed like that). As I recall, this was about half the weight of the rotomolded plastic one used on the Mini-Max.

I had to get very good at TIG welding for this tank. I am no pro, but now one of the better welders at the EAA chapter. This was some of the most difficult welding I have done. I also failed at welding a tank when working on my Thatcher CX4. If you want to see that mess it is here:

Hey Bobby, very very nice. Please comment on how you executed the fuel tank.  Metal? fiberglass? gas line size? fuel out put front? back? both? fuel filter? gascolator? Tank mounting details? Fuel filler tube and cap? vent line? Thanks for your help and once again very nice.   Possum

... And to use SimpleFly while in my Legal Eagle, I made a little mount for my phone. That can be found here:

https://worktablecnc.us/projects/phonemount.html

Since everybody's Eagle is different, I did not upload the mount file, but the details of how I built the whole thing are in there.

I hope this helps,

Hello Eagler's Nest,

I previously posted a link to my build log:

https://worktablecnc.us/projects/legaleagle.html

One of the responses was from Chuck-in-Indiana regarding my navigation app. I thought this might be useful to the crowd so please let me formally introduce it:

I wrote a free moving map navigation app for light-aircraft / ultralight pilots. It is intentionally simple. The flight display shows altitude, ground speed, and bearing, and the navigation display shows FAA sectionals. It does pull in ADS-B targets, and it connects to ADS-IP so you can see each when we fly. You can find it here:

https://worktablecnc.us/projects/simplefly.html

Like I said, it is free. You do not need to sign up, give out an email, be blasted with ads, or pay for features later. I just thought it would be something we could all use.

I hope this helps,

Hey TezzaT, thanks for the input, but I think I have mine worked out.  I'm going to solder a brass flange to the 6" pipe and cut a matching AL flange for inside the tank.   I'll shorten the 6" pipe. Then rivet the three together. It will be AL flange, Tank top, brass flange.

I wonder if 3d printing something from nylon or PETG would work.  Would be easy to print and draw.

Thanks for replying, I’ve made a couple of the delrin bushings and I’ve found them tricky to get right. So far, one useable and one a bit off center. The other thing that puts me off them is that they need a bigger hole in the hinge blocks. The brass bushing material that I have needs only a 7.2mm diameter hole, the delrin ones that I’ve made need almost 10mm diameter holes. I’m not sure if I can get them much slimmer.
I’m thinking that the brass bushing method is the easier option, just not as elegant as the delrin ones.
