First Flight Legal Eagle B-95
« on: October 06, 2015, 08:17:08 AM »
On Saturday, October 3rd at the Oroville CA. airport Legal Eagle XL B-95 made its first flight. It was very windy but mostly down the runway.  B-95 is powered by full VW, 4 cyl, 1835 with dual Mikuni carbs.  Full power is much improved from taxi tests but still not correct. One cylinder head is running very cool while other warms up as expected.  Plugs on that side were black with soot.  The air intake scoops are not installed yet so we did not try to stay in air at power for very long.  As soon as the scoops are installed and carb issue is resolved we will do some more test flying and get some time in it along with full testing at altitude.

The 4 cylinder engine and machine feels very heavy compare to my LE with the 1/2 vw, the smoothness is very noticeable even though engine is no running at full strength.  Acceleration is very smooth and responsive.  I am putting this on Eaglersnest for Howard and Rich. More to come as we get further into testing.

That's awesome Les! Hope you get the bugs worked out soon. So does that make THREE LE's now, or did you end up selling the other yellow one?

Way to go Les,

Why the 4 cyl though instead of the 45 hp 1/2 VW like you have. Cost I suppose.  Either way you guys are going to have a regular Air force pretty soon. I thought we would have one here in Wisconsin but things are moving slow. Come on Jacob and Troy.. Lets get the lead out.... Just kidding.

It will be a LOT better when you get the two right cylinders running...SO quiet on that side!

Looks Great Les. Tell Howard and Rich congrats!
I'd like some details on the build as in what was done for w&b with the heavy engine and any other mods

I've been dragging my feet on the WI front as well...   I'm determined that this will be the winter of the wings!  Right after I finish the shed foundation repairs, winterize the barn etc, and  finish up a few house projects.  I cut back on class load so I should have more time now hopefully!

Congrats on the first flight though!
