Slow Progress
« on: September 19, 2020, 07:49:54 AM »
Things are going slower than I'd hoped but here we are.
The wings and ailerons are varnished. I'm trying to pre-bend the leading edges to help with installation. Tail section is done. Fuel tank is done. Landing gear components are fabricated and awaiting welding. Tail wheel is done. 4130 tubes are still hanging from the basement ceiling. I need to get them into the garage sooner rather than later. They ain't gonna weld themselves. I have an oxy-acetylene rig set up with the MECO Midget torch. I have the fabric and glue for the wings.

I just ordered an engine from Scott Casler, should be arriving late Spring. I'm going to be getting my prop from Frank Johnson. Should be a nice little setup.

I have only evenings to work on the plane as my days off are for other projects [see attached] :( I'm probably not the first to sing this sad song. Oh well... time to put the tool belt on. Wish me luck on the ladder.

Sounds like progress to me, well done, you mentioned trying to pre-bend the leading edges.  "?" These looked longer than 4 foot sections,  are you bending the ply the easy way or hard way for the material?  I am not sure the hard way against the ply's will work... Just thinking out loud a bit.

All the plywood 02-20300 was purchased from ACS in 4' x 4' [.8mm] sheets. What you see on the table is already cut to shape and length. It already had a slight curve to it and I kept that orientation so I suspect it's bent the easy way. I'm just doing it so I have less of a battle shaping/bending during glue up... at least that's the plan. It worked for the ailerons in the upper right corner of the picture.

If you are using T88 epoxy you can wet the plywood and it will bend easier and T88 epoxy will actually bond better when damp.

I went with the 45 hp. In for a penny, in for a pound I reasoned. Besides, I read good things from others using the bigger engine. This might also allow for better prop choices: climb, cruise, or somewhere in-between.
I should know more in the Spring when the motor finally shows up.
