1/2vw Case Breather Questions
« on: December 24, 2019, 06:52:00 AM »
Is the case breather supposed to face forward towards the prop? Anyone know why there is a little "F" stamped in the aluminum plate as in the picture? That aluminum plate has a little spring loaded check valve in it which allows air out of the case but I guess no return air? Also, there is what I can only describe as a very course gold brillo sponge under the breather plate. Is that to prevent oil from escaping?

A lot of pictures of other breathers seem to be facing towards the firewall with a hose attached exiting beneath the engine.

Mine faces to the rear with a hose connected to it traveling down and under the engine.

Thanks Chris. It does seem odd facing forward where debris can enter easier but then I noticed that little stamped "F" and of course I'm thinking "forward" or "front" to be facing front.  That's an interesting looking engine mount. Do you have a full picture of it?

I will have to see if I can get you some more pictures of it - I do not have any right now that really focus on the mount so you can see what is going on - especially with all the stuff around it.  I am working out in the shop today so should have you something in a little while.

Wild guess... the "F" stands for firewall? At least that would aim the hose to the rear of the airplane.

Firewall....Did not think of that. It seems it is on backwards so I will turn it around. Thanks for the extra pics Chris. Very unique top mount. I currently have a bed mount on my 1/2vw and was trying to come up with a creative engine mount.
