Hirth engine?
« on: December 09, 2016, 11:40:57 AM »
Hello All,
First post on the forum,
I've got the Eagle XL plans and am planning out the project to get started this winter.
Wondering if anyone has put a Hirth F-23 on an Eagle?  I know I might get yelled at but 50 HP, 87lbs w/electric start.
Maybe 50HP is too much for the Legal eagle?  CG issues?
I like the 1/2 VW but just looking at options.
Thanks!

Or Flyer,
I can't help much on "if it will work"  but was wondering from you and others, if you expect speed to go much above 60 mph, (doubtful)  and if so, would the fuel burn be almost twice as much as the VW at 45 hp?   I don't know, just asking.

Good question though.  That is how we all learn.

Also looking at the Polini Thor 250 Dual Spark.
Pretty Sweet!  36.5 HP, 57lbs installed!
Here is a link to a Blog by Belite Aircraft.

One thing about JIM, is that he is willing and able to try most anything...and generally writes up a pretty detailed report on these products. As seen in the last post link.

I still have great hopes for Franks engine, though a bit more more than what we are talking about....  if you calculate the % difference-  a lot more power to be exact.

cheers

The Hirth F-23 with 2.5:1 reduction on a 485 pound gross RW-2 that I fly has nothing superfluous like a tach, fuel gauge,  or flow meter, just two CHT and two EGT needles in a single gauge. But based on average fuel flow of 2.25 US gal per hour, I can work backwards from the chart and throttle position that it's probably turning the 72 inch x 39 pitch Culver prop at 1900 or so rpm at 65 percent or so to give 60-65 mph or so (by the strut mounted pressure gauge).
