Simple electrical system so I can have a starter motor

Hello Everyone,

I’m in the process of researching a VW 4 cylinder powered Cabin Eagle build and would appreciate some information.  I’d like to hear from anyone who has installed a simple electrical system and starter motor on a VW engine so I don’t have to hand prop to start?  I’m looking for what an electrical system might involve and where I can get info on this and adding a basic starter/Gen setup for a VW engine. I would like to build or acquire at a reasonable cost.     Thanks in advance everyone!

If you don't want to add a transponder/ADSB depending on location, you can add a battery, starter and a wind powered generator.  This is as simple as possible.  I have in my Double Eagle, 2 batteries light weight ones (20 AH and a 10 AH), with a wind powered generator to power my Radio, Digital EFIS, Ipad, ADSB in stratux.  Remember if you add an engine powered Gen or Alt and you live or fly into any C or B area you will need transponder and ADSB out.

Thanks for sharing this Joey, much appreciated.  I was hoping to get some ideas like this from the post. The battery connected to a wind powered generator would allow me to solve a number of issues, one being how to power a starter, radios, EFIS, etc.  I have a few follow-up questions for you too.

1. How have you wired your batteries, are they daisy chained together or running directly to devices?  I photo would be helpful if available.

2. I can’t tell from your post if you are using a starter or not. If you are, what type mounting plate are you using and are you using a stock flywheel or a custom setup, if so what?

I do not have a starter on my DE.  So what I have is 20 and 10 AH batteries, the 20 AH runs everything with the Wind Generator charging the 20 AH battery.  I then have a Schottky Diode between the two batteries so the 10 AH will be charged but power is only one way.  The 10 AH battery is a backup for the EFIS only.  I hope this helps.
