What is the weight of a double eagle empty .

Someone out there must have that info. I was looking for the weight with the engine.  Just looking at my options for wheels . I am looking at the razor MX 500 wheels with disc brakes.

DE Stubby weighs 564 lbs empty, no fuel, but otherwise ready to fly.  Please understand that it is heavy as compared to the prototype.  It has a larger engine with accessories, carb heat, cabin heat, electric start, alternator, oil cooler, and has a well supplied panel, brakes, radio, etc.  There have been several discussions on this group about the DE weights, with some examples, I believe, weighting a bit more.

I plan to add a 16" wheel with a rotor attached. These wheels are from a Razor MX 500 dirt bike. Wheel with rotor are $44 and the brake caliper is $15. The wheel is rated for 250 pounds so this is borderline. I would have to make a bracket for the caliper but the cables can be gotten out of the junk yard. Cheap set up but I like the looks of the bicycle wheel on these aircraft. Because it is a steel wheel, I can always weld a 16" plate and mount it on the outside of the wheel like a Folker DRIII. I may even paint it like the Red Barron. the sky is not the limit.

They look to have nice big hubs...  Maybe you could lace them to stronger rims, if the rims are the limiting factor.

I don't understand what you would want to weld...  Do you mean put the caliper mount outboard..?

Thanks Dan for the info. I did not see the service bulletin. I would weld a round 16" plate to the outer side of the wheel to strengthen it. Keep the brake to the inside. The plate would be something .035" thick to keep weight down. I guess I will have to get the wheel and see once how it looks. I don't want a hard landing and bend the wheel then I am $44 out.  I will decide when I get the wheel. I would also get rid of the knob tire and put a street cruiser wheel on it. The biggest I could find and fit. What do you think.

There are some nice fat smooth tires out now for the cruiser bikes...

I'm gonna be surprised if that rim is steel.  

If it is, you can do a lot better weight and strength wise with a Piet type wheel, or Aerodrome wheel.  

It may cost more, but a prop strike if you break a wheel is going to cost too.
