First Flight of Legal Eagle XL ORV and the Verner 3V
« on: June 09, 2018, 09:43:03 PM »

Made the first flight today of the Verner 3V on front of ORV.  Doing some testing and development work to determine how the 3V compares to the 1/2 VW.

View looking at engine.  Remember we have not change or checked carb settings or tuning yet.  Engine looks like it is moving a fair amount at times but our mounting bushings are the soft ones. Lots to do in next few days to get ready for longer flight early next week.

Awesome, Les.  I did not know you were working on installing a Verner on your LEXL.  Tight security at your Skunkworks!

I can tell you one big difference from the 1/2 VW - the sound.  The Verner's sound is too cool.  Your airplane got off the ground in what looked like 10 feet.  The head wind helped a lot, but the Verner has great pull.

As I reported earlier, we flew our "stout" LE and it flew well.  It was not scary like flying with the original 29 hp half VW while climbing over the trees at the strip, but still did not climb out as well as we think it can.  We are working with Frank to get a prop dialed in.  Testing from a couple days ago of the latest mods to the prop looks promising, but we need a more accurate altimeter (we are using an old skydiving altimeter) to measure rate of climb using the video time stamp and then we'll do some more testing.

Our engine shakes a lot around 1000 to 1300 rpm, then smooths out.  But, I can feel vibration on the rudder pedals, especially at full throttle.  Our engine mount rubbers are sideways as compared to yours.  We will continue to look at the engine mount and probably make some mods to allow more movement in the rubbers.

Originally we just fed the carb with gravity feed from the wing tank, and the engine ran OK, but later found that putting the fuel pump in line produced 100 rpm more than without.  We have the Walbro carb that came on the engine - your carb looks different, and don't know  if you use a fuel pump, but keep this in mind as you tune.

I made some videos with the gopro mounted on an attachment on the fuselage behind the pilot shoulder, but it was very shaky from the vibration, and hard to see instrument readings.  The last time I put a jury-rigged chest mount on and got smooth video which helped keep track of what was going on.

Great job, keep the info coming!

I used the electric fuel pump to start with because my fuel level is about even with carb.  Right now there is double vibration isolation, one at engine and the other at bushings where 1/2"VW mounts.  after i get a little run time on it will remove the bushings at the fuselage and just try ones on engine.  have not touched the carb adjustments yet.
