Wing spar wood
« on: March 06, 2018, 06:18:13 PM »
I am wondering what everyone is doing for spruce for there spars.Aircraft Spruce doesn't sell it long enough (that I have found) as single pieces, so are you ordering planks long enough and ripping them down , or scarf jointing shorter pieces?

Aircraft spruce will sell you spruce cap strips  in a 13' length. I know. I have 8 of them. Talk to a human. I placed my order on the phone asking for longer wood and steel. She placed me on hold while she talked to other departments and gave me everything I asked for. No upcharge or service fee.

 Updating, an old thread

For my spars, I used White Ash, from a local exotic woods,  yard.

Now don't let that scare you , anything that is not construction grade lumber,  (as in found in Lowes, or Home Depot) is "Exotic" lumber. It's just a marketing term.

I purchased  3/4" x  6" x 12 foot planks, milled them to 3/16 x 3/4,
reversing every other strip, to equalize any internal stresses,
then using T-88 structural epoxy,(from Amazon.com) I epoxied the five strips together, to make two 3/4" x  1" for each (front and rear) spar.

I bought the "Bargain Bag" of Spruce cut offs, for 39.00, from "Aircraft Spruce", to mill into 1/4" x 1/4" rib pieces. and I also bought some 3/16" birch Ply for the gussets. All in all I paid, about $150.00 for each wing.

That's less than the shipping charges would have been for me ordering online.

The other bonus, is being laminated, as stated by Steen Aero,(although I can no longer find the page)

is that "their  destructive load testing,  proved laminations to be 25% stronger than solid wood, and when they broke under stress, the laminations broke separately, one at a time, rather than all at once,

Their FAQ's state

Weight of my finished wing skeleton, minus the Ailerons = 23 pounds cost me only $28.00 for all the spars.  No outrageous shipping charges either. and I had them the same day!  [I picked them up :-) ]

Thank You, scottiniowa!
although my plane isn't an LE, it looks like one,  somewhat....

I came up with my design, after seeing the "MASH" helicopter fuselage, (I just inverted it) and the MiniMax wings. Thought I could build it and power it with a 38 Hp Kawasaki Air cooled eng...  (roughly 48 lbs.) it's hung upside down with a 2.58:1 belt drive mounted above, placing the thrust line
inline with the empennage.

My ailerons too are different, ribs being cut from .250" ply and drilled to lighten, Then
JB welded to a .750" 6061 T6 tube,  all connected with Push/Pull tubes.

Not only do the wings fold down, and back, but the Empennage folds up, allowing the wings to sit lower when folded, for access into a normal size garage,

The cabin is similar to the CE in construction to allow for wing fold the way I designed the mechanism. It's similar to the Kolb method.

Nothing is wider than the Wheelbase, and only a foot longer than when not folded. The height does not exceed 5 feet.

I hope to have it taxi testing in a few more months.
It'll be done in WWII Invasion colors, "Olive Drab"
(w/ Black white recognition stripes)
and my pride and joy being an F-4 Phanton Grip. with working PTT switch, and
Hat switch, for Elec trim.

Also working on some other goodies as accessories, but will keep that secret till the bugs are worked out.

Chache
