Alternate engine advice for newby
« on: October 26, 2020, 07:40:50 PM »
Hi
I'll be starting a build on an XL shortly. as I live in a mountainous area I feel that having more power over the half VW would give an extra safety margin for me.
Engine I have been researching:
HKS 700E 60HP / 140 lbs complete
Jabiru 2200 80hp / 140 pounds complete
3 cylinder geo/suzuki 65 HP / 140 complete
Anyone can give their opinion on these powerplants and suitability of using them in an XL ?
I live in Canada and the Part 103 does not exist here so a little extra weight is OK. I understand that using a full VW is possible but the weight makes the plane less nimble.
Thanks, Glenn

How about a 1/2 Continental O-200..?  Claimed weight is 110 including both slick mags and Marvelous dribbler carb, but not starter, alternator, oil or propeller.

Kitplanes 2019 engine buyers guide lists it for 4500 bux and claims 57 HP @ 2900 rpm.

I searched for a source for these previously and found nothing, their website seems to have been abandoned at the time the engines were in prototype stage...? But yes very attractive engine.

They are not much on updating their website...  They apparently are in production now.

Do you know of an alternate way to contact them? The phone number is out of service and no useable links on the web site!

Yes Wooden Wing Specialty seems to  be the contact, but they have yet to get back to me.....I am finding most companies seem to be out of the office lately due to Covid. ?

I've chosen the Suzuki G 10 3 cylinder for my project. Low weight, plenty of power, reliable, water cooled, electronic ignition, fuel injection, electric start, same cost as buying a half VW kit.

They used to have a Yahoo Group call FlyGeo.  I do not know if they went to groups.io or are just going tango uniform.

Verizon will be deleting the rest of the corpse of YG this Dec 16th however...

With that much dependency on electricity, you definitely need to get with these people http://www.aeroelectric.com/

The O-100 doesn't even need so much as a 9V battery.

Keep us posted...

I commented on a Pegasus video on youtube tonight asking if the project was dead. The video owner replied to it saying it was not and that it was just delayed due to the pandemic. However, with the lack of communication on their end and being not willing to commit to any dates or specifics on when they think it might be available, i would not hold my breath.
