"Non aviation" VW engine opinions...
« on: February 26, 2020, 10:01:33 AM »
Hi guys.
I know the preferred engines are the ones modified for use on an airplane, the main ones from Scott Castler, Great Plains, Revmaster…
What is your opinion about installing a stock single ignition  vw aircooled with stock crank, cams, Casing not modified and simply installing a prop hub?

It's been done hundreds of times before. Just be sure the engine is well built, with proper clearances, a proper fuel intake system, and a well tested ignition. Remember whose life is on the line.

What do you mean by the proper fuel intake system, Kamcoman77?

Just designed to provide proper fuel flow when aircraft is placed at extreme flight angles. If using a fuel pump, float levels could be compromised. If not using a fuel pump, suitable head pressure must provide constant fuel flow to carb/carbs. Possible carb icing must also be addressed. There are many examples of good VW and 1/2 VW intake/fuel systems on the Internet.

You could save a lot of money going with a 32mm Mikuni instead of The RevFlow, if you want a single carb. If using dual Mikunis, like a lot of us, don't go any larger than 26mm or you will compromise airflow velocity. If interested in the RevFlow, be sure to read up on it. There have been issues that RevMaster has supposedly corrected. I think a lot of the Sonnex owners are using the RevFlow on larger than stock, 4-cylinder VW's.
