Chord and spar-to-spar dimensions?
« on: May 21, 2021, 10:59:26 PM »
Hi,
Mattias Jönsson from Sweden here! New to the forum and I have just bought the plans and started to go through them.

Not surprisingly I have a number of standard questions - yes, I have browsed through basically all old posts! :) - but what is the general opinion on total chord dimension, spar-to-spar dimension and the spar-to-trailing edge dimension?

27,5" spar-to-spar and 18,75" spar-to-trailing edge is what I can see, but how about total chord?

I know of Scott's supplemental drawings, but I haven't bought them yet.

Hi, Mattias. If I remember correctly, the chord is 54 inches. I built my ribs from the plans, full sized drawings, taped together. I recommend Scott's supplemental drawings. Have fun!

My XL wing ribs were built using the Iron Design (Scott) drawings. As shown in the photo, the chord is 54", not including the 1" trailing edge.

I was always of the opinion that it didn't really matter that much because it's YOUR airplane and doesn't have to fit anyone else's fuselage. In other words, I built my wings and the distance between the spars didn't matter because I can weld the wing attach fittings on the fuselage at what ever dimension my wings happen to be. (Why I built wings first) I'd be willing to bet that if you measured 10 Legal Eagles you'd get 11 different dimensions!  I would imagine that if the distance between the spars is very close to the distance between the lower wing strut attachment you'd be OK, and following the plans, it should be very close to the same.

Thanks!

I just realized that the wing is very much a copy of the Mini-Max and that makes it quite a lot easier, having downloaded those plans years ago.
