Wing ribs #7, 12 & 13 aileron hinge block reinforcing doublers.
« on: December 10, 2023, 01:23:04 PM »
Hi folks,
After a long delay waiting for wood to arrive I’ve finally started making wing ribs. I have Iron Designs supplemental plans but I’m not planning on using the K blocks. I’m finding it difficult to visualise how the ribs either side of the ailerons are reinforced for the aileron hinge blocks. That’s rib # 7,12&13 using Iron Designs numbering system. I get the 1/4” doubler on root side of rib 7 and the 1/8” doubler on the root side of ribs 12 and 13. But are there also doublers on the outboard side of those ribs?
Also when drilling the holes for the aileron hinges, what is the best sequence for drilling to ensure correct alignment?
If anyone has any photos of these areas I’d love to see them.
Thanks, and seasons greetings to all.

Check out the builders logs. There are several different builds there with photos and comments.
Some are located in the sub- boards while others are in the threads below them.
Look things over 10 times, plan 5 times, measure 3 times, cut once.
I pre drilled the bushing holes in the aileron hinge blocks when building them so they'd be perfectly true, then once the ailerons were built, I jigged and clamped them in place and used the previously drilled bushing hole to drill the hole in the reinforced wing rib. then I glued the wing side hinge block in place with a 3/8' rod holding it in alignment. (use some kind of release agent on the rod, else you'll glue it too!)

I used the K-blocks and made a fiberglass aileron cove cover with one layer of Rutan 7725 8.8 oz cloth & epoxy resin. Aileron fits nicely and structure seems strong.

Thanks guys, the pictures are great.
I didn’t get any 1/4” ply in my crate, so it looks like I’ll just have to double up some 1/8”.
