GPS speedo
« on: June 29, 2024, 08:41:09 AM »
I was looking for instruments and came across a gps speedo with altitude and voltage. It also had a few other features but they wouldn't have to be used. Amazon has them from $20 dollars to $60. They look like it maybe a good backup to primary instruments.  Very low power draw also. Is anybody finding a way to use something like this?

I can't post a link,  i just went to Amazon and did a search for gps speedo. At least a hundred different options. Cheap to expensive.

Amazon won't let me grab a link.  They must be afraid of us sharing information.

Most every automotive GPS unit has a screen that is just a speedo, with altitude, and time (in hours) of travel.

Garmin also offers their "aera" units that has aviation/topographic maps loaded into them as well, but they are a bit pricey.

My car speedo quit, I downloaded an app for my cell phone to keep from getting speeding tickets until I figured that one out.

Gps speed is not a substitute for an airspeed indicator... ground speed does not make the wings fly, airspeed does.

I wasn't saying that a gps would replace flight instruments . It would give you ground speed and a few other things like voltage, compass, altitude,  longitude/latitude. My question was concerning if they were being used as a backup.

The only flight instrument I have is a surprisingly accurate Hall wind meter, which is really more than you need.  :) Climbing out on a gorgeous dawn patrol with ground fog..

I have the above app, and although it's free, send them a few bucks every now and then. Good stuff.
