New spar grain question
« on: September 12, 2015, 05:38:31 AM »
I am building the rear spars for my XL and noticed the material for the bottom spar cap was sawn with the grain turned vertical instead of horizontal as called out in the plans. All the other spar caps are correct for the front and rear spars. Is this a deal breaker or usable? The freight will cost way more than the material if I reorder it as they are 154 inches long.
It's a brutal struggle for the biscuit!

If the spar cap is otherwise flawless, I would use it. The spar caps are either in tension or in compression when the wing is loaded and that doesn't change with the orientation of the grain. What might change is how it's glued to the webbing and therefore how the forces are transferred into the spar cap material. I'm less clear about the consequences of that. Leonard tested the wing with a 1,000 lb. load. There is a pretty good margin of safety designed into the wing. The level flight loading of the wing for me will be approximately 235 lbs. per wing. That would be my reasoning for my decision with my plane.

Or you could ask you next of kin what they think you should do.

The material is very nice and every thing will be glued with T-88 epoxy.
I would ask my next of kin but both are a little hard to get in touch with. :-)
