Compression and diagonals

Hi all

I have some questions on the installation of the compression ribs and the diagonals.
On the video, it appears the compression ribs go into the spars up to the plywood. The DE plans look like they butt up against the spar caps and use the square plywood pieces to better secure it to the spar. So on the bottom, do I butt them up to the spar caps? 
Also, how does the top compression rib mount? Does it butt up to the cap, or butt up to the plywood and lay up to the spar cap?
One last question: how do the compression ribs mount?

Hi Pete,
here are some images of how i did mine, I ran the diagonals between the spar caps as its impossible to run them between the webs. I consulted others who confirmed they did theirs the same way. Structurally it also makes sense. The Video supplied with the DE plans shows variations between what is built in the viseo and the DE plans. I think the video is based on the LE LEXL. the attach fittings certainly are not those on the DE Plans

And another question concerning the compression ribs.
Some are square, but some are not. Does it matter if they are mounted in any orientation, or do I need to make sure to follow a certain orientation. And if the orientation matters, is it different for the top and the bottom? What I mean is, should they be mounted so they are wide, or tall?

Hi Pete,

I spent some time going through this on mine because I short ordered the Spruce because the cutting list i went off was incorrect. I wanted to make sure I used what Spruce I had correctly and evenly. Where I did not have Spruce I used Hoop Pine as thats all we have here in Australia and I could not be bothered re ordering more timber just for this. Its light and strong. I made up the following spreadsheet to show what sizes are used where in the wing. The notations in the sheet show what i used in Spruce and Hoop Pine. This will not matter to you though. The measurements are transferred from the plans.

other than squares I took the largest dimension to be the vertical plane

Note Station 1 refers to the Inside second Rib as per the Plans Amendment for the additional and required compression struts.

If anyone does not agree please feel free to shoot some holes in this

Thanks for yet another response.
As I watch the video, it does appear that the long dimension is the vertical dimension, but I also know that is for the LE wing, and I know there are some differences so wanted to get some input from others.
I'm now ready to cut the verticals and the diagonals and make more progress.
Off to the basement to cut some wood!

Throwing another log into the fire,  regarding assembling the wing diagonals/comp.ribs et al, is there a preferred order of assembly of these parts?    Seem to recall a distant mention of doing the diagonals first and then the compression ribs.    Ready to forge ahead with this stage and thought I'd ask.     Thanks fellas.    John Reinking/Woodinville, WA  DE

John I did my compression ribs first, then the diagonals if you look at my Album you can see why I did it this way. I am not sure if this is the correct method but after a lot of vacillating and question asking, this is what i ended up doing

QUICK QUESTION:   A bldr recently presented a walk-around of his DE in which he described enclosing the engine compartment.   He pointed out the noise cowl as being a type M1C1  (Looks like an early Piper nose cowl.    Says it cost around $100-150.   Can't find an M1C1 by specific #.  Any thoughts or suggestions?

The only one I know with a cowl is Shane Riemenschneider -  Nickname "High Noon" perhaps ask him.

Suggest looking at the Spruce MC 1A and MC 1B nose cowl bowl offerings for similarity to what was shown...

New question. This one is about the cut on the diagonals.
I am ready to cut them but do not know if there is a best practice for the fit.
Should I cut so it is flush against the spar, or cut so it is flush against the compression struts, or cut a more complicated fit so it butts up equally against the spar and the compression strut?
The DE drawing shows one end against the compression strut and one end against the spar. The video shows both sides against the spar, and Paul's photos show the cut to butt up against both surfaces.
Leonard, any reason to do it one specific way?
