Landing gear springs

Can someone walk me thru the process of pre loading the springs on landing gear. I have the gear built but cannot understand how to set it up correctly. HELP.

I just made a simple press from plywood and 1/4" threaded rod. The very top is solid with a hole at the bottom for the spring, I believe Lenard said he preloads his to about 5/8" can't remember offhand.
