Aceptable runway length /land size.
« on: May 22, 2016, 04:27:13 AM »
Hey all, so after calling around my area, there is a pretty severe shortage of hanger spaces available with in a hour drive, with all the local airports having waiting lists.
Personally, I think there are a lot of hanger full of cars and non aviation stuff...
Anyway, I am thinking about purchasing some land and putting a grass runway on it.   Ideally, I would like to put a couple of pole barn style hangers to rent out to help cover maintenance costs.

I understand the size of the parcel, the presence of any obstructions, drainage, and so on.  What I need is some advice about is grass strip runway length.  Taxes out here are crazy, so I don't want a piece of land much bigger then what I actually need.

So how long does a runway need to be for the average kind of plane that would fly out of a grass field?

Most I have seen have been about 2000' long fence to fence here are a couple very close to my house.
One is actually registered and on the books, and about 1/4 mile from my house (HM Ranch Airport). I was thinking about contacting them and see what can be done to get it back to the airstrip, you can actually see the turn around on the north end.
The other is about 12 Miles from my house, I;m trying to help the owner clean out one of the hangers he has and to possible rent it from him. he has two hangers and the property is about 2,000 x 325'.
With that being said I would look for 2,000 feet so if you rent out space people would have a little length to crow hop or land if needed. But if just for yourself then maybe 1,500 feet.

2,000 x 400 = 800,000 S.F. / 43,560 = 18.365 Acres.
