Tail hinges - 2 vs 3
« on: April 08, 2017, 08:07:39 AM »
My LE   XL plans call out 21 tail hinges (3 per location). I notice that many builders have successfully flown with only 2. By my calculations, that's a weight savings of only .22 lbs per aircraft. I know weight savings is critical, but is a single shear, bending load condition really worth it?  I could fly barefoot and save more than that.

FWIW....I plan on using all 3. I know its been done with 2 successfully,  but I just can't make myself do it.
A good trip to the bathroom before a flight should take care of those few ounces...
