Extruded Aluminum Jury Struts
« on: May 13, 2018, 03:30:33 AM »
Hi everyone.
I am in the process of installing the extruded aluminum Jury struts that came with the Kit of my DE.
I believe they came from Mrs. Carlson as noted from the plans but I somehow lost the instruction sheet
that came with it.  Can anyone or does anyone still has the instructions for the installation?  Or any plans
or drawings which I could use?
Thanks and happy building.

Perhaps you could send for another set of the instructions from Mrs. Carlson.

However, if they show drilling the lift strut I would not bother.  You can never convince me that drilling the lift strut out there in the middle where it is absolutely its weakest, is congruent with sound engineering practice.
(my non engineer opinion)

The lift strut needs help in this area, that is why you are adding the jury strut.

Do it like the pic below shows... Same pic attached.  Note the clamp on the lift strut is doing double duty holding the fair lead for the aileron cable.

To use the square bar attachment method utilized in the rest of the lift strut the bushing shown in the pic would simply be replaced with the bar.

I would recommend some thin washers on each end of the bar to allow adjustment to insure the clamp is snug enough around the lift strut.

The pic is from a Clipped wing cub... An aerobatic mod for the venerable Piper J-3.
