No Rear Spar Cap Taper?
« on: June 11, 2020, 10:25:22 AM »
Finishing up my front spars. Going to start the rear spars tomorrow. Why is there no taper on the rear spar cap?

I'm pretty sure that means no taper front to back, but it needs the bevel on top to fit the rib...

I haven't looked at the plans since I can't remember.

The rear spar, according to the plans, does not need to be tall enough to require an upper surface bevel like the front spar. There will be a tiny triangular shaped gap between the upper rear spar cap and the upper rib capstrips. This was probably done to save weight.

Here is my WAG:

The rear spar in enclosed within the rib. Aerodynamic lift is pulling the rib up. The rear strut is pulling the rear spar down. The top of the spar plays no role at all in the rib/spar coupling.

Me thinketh!

If the gap is very much, I would prolly want some spooge troweled into it to fill.  Perhaps a sliver of a wood wedge.

What is spooge you say?  Epoxy mixed with micro ballons or cotton flox...

So lets be clear,  the note saying no taper is if fact referring to what I called the top bevel?  So the rear spar is tapered on the vertical plane meaning front to back?

It takes a community...

The ribs are glued to the spar and don't *need* to fit the opening. No need to over think this..  :)

In the time, one needs to read and decide the "should I or should I not" you could build the rear spar, and hand block plane or use a motorized planer set on the bevel and take the .141" off the rear to front.  zoom zoom and done.

if you don't have either (you must have had something if you did the front spar) then we are back to the slight gap and the discussion covered that as well.

Just my opinion.

Sadly, I sold the 914 to pay for this project. (Going to have to change my handle). It had a SBC350 anyway LOL.
