Aileron horn fasteners?
« on: September 03, 2020, 09:22:56 AM »
I'm starting to line things up for the aileron ribs and was wondering what fasteners do you use to attach the aileron horn? 3/16" holes so AN-3 bolts/washer but do you use a Tee nut then with permanent thread locker?

I used a little AN3 nutplate. Used little 4-40 machine screws to mount. Will also epoxy to ply rib.

Nicely done, Keith. It is Keith, isn't it?

Yes, it's Keith, and thank you. One thing that may not be obvious in the other photo is the angled aileron horn. I did that so the pivot point for the pushrod would be directly under the pivot point for the hinge bolt. Also a little overkill, I put dowels through the ply into the hinge block to share the shear force with the T-88.

All I'm going to say is if you can shear that T88 on the bearing block with aileron loads..
"Folks.. we've got problems in River city.. it starts with T and rhymes with".. oh never mind.  :))

An old friend (RIP) once said to me.. "Chuck, you know if you think about it the engine is glued on to a wood fuselage."  :)

I was worried about flight loads in a victory roll at 250 kts. Like I said, overkill. The only way you could get much of a shear load is a sticking hinge bushing.

I like the angled horn. Was thinking along the same lines so mounted it like you did so as to make changes to the geometry quicker/ easier.

I also did the same sort of alignment with elevator & rudder horns. Should help a little with cable tension changes.

Keith, did you use 3/16 countersunk head bolts/screws to mount the aileron horns to the aileron end rib?
I’ve left a 1/4” gap at each end of the ailerons, but with 1/8” thickness for the horn and 1/8” for the head of a standard bolt I’m wondering if I’ve left enough space for covering and still have free movement.

I just used standard AN3 bolts and nuts, never gave it another thought. I *did* make sure there was plenty of clearance to allow for the inevitable warping etc.in service over the years that someone else  :o  :) will have to deal with. IMHO, many try to get airplane parts to fit up too tightly when a "running fit" is actually better. (shrug)
