Legal Eagle XL Spar clarification
« on: December 13, 2020, 07:31:35 PM »
On page 35 of the plans, the root side of wing seems to show: solid ply on front, 3/4” wood filler (trapezoidal shaped), then I believe solid ply (maybe same shape as filler - see attached pix). And then a 2” wide ply under bracket.

Am I correctly reading these plans?

Again I’ll attach pix to help explain. Also will include pix from Facebook...

As I understand Leonard Milholland says this is a more robust wing, so I know it’s different than some have built, so can anyone that has built the XL version of the wing, please give some guidance here.

Leonard can you please confirm this, Thanks for all you do!!!

That's the way I built mine, you're fine. Looks nice!

I believe the plans dimension of 1 1/8" is correct. There was a clarification issued that deleted the " 1/8" ply both sides". Also Scott in Iowa has some very nice print addendums which clearly shows that there is no 1/8" ply on the back of the FS and none on the front of RS

Scott's drawings are very nice. I am using them for my wing ribs. However, they are not addendums to the plans. Only Leonard can make official changes. Scott's drawings are his own interpretation of the plans and a few nice ideas of his own he has added. If I was going to make my dimension between wing fittings 1-1/8" I would remove the small, 2" wide plywood doublers on the rear of the front spar and the front of the rear spar, not the 1/8" ply covering the 3/4" thick filler blocks. To each his own.

Let's face it. The plans are open to "interpretation."  :)
To the OP:
My plans are current, and show the plywood on both sides.. so that is what I did, also.

I realize that there is a note somewhere saying to omit the big plywood plate, but that is not "standard aircraft practice."
As Kamcoman said, If I were going to leave off any of the plywood, it would be the little scab plate under the fitting.
Man! There are a lot of "nooks and crannies" to varnish. :) Whatever made me decide to build  wooden wing? Oh, yeah.. I remember.. I wanted something to *do* during the Covid thing.

Yeah. Covid has been the cause of much insanity.
