better half vw usable engine numbers

In Leonard Milholland's "The Better Half VW Engine" publication that he sells, there is a list of "only the year models and engine numbers that are usable for conversions as described in this book".
For example, one of the engine numbers in this list is "AE-0-999-001".
But isn't that the serial number for just one engine ?
All the numbers listed look like this.
It seems to me that I should be able to use any engine with a number that starts with "AE-0"
Isn't that right ?
Does anyone have any insight on this ?
Thanks.

AE tells you what size, years of production, etc. If you have a good case stamped AE, you are good to go. Serial number does not matter.

You are welcome. And, welcome to the forum. Are you building a Legal Eagle or XL? We are here to help. From a list of engine numbers I found on the internet, it looks like AD, AE, and AH prefix cases are the ones to look for. They are dual oil relief, cases made with AS41 magnesium alloy. Good stuff.

I am in the initial stages of building a legal eagle.
Just planning, reading, buying tools.
I am making a rib wing jig.
I bought some T-88 epoxy, but I think I want to use glue for the ribs.
I have not selected a glue to use and would appreciate suggestions.

Figured out how to add the engine ID document to a comment. Click on the attachment.

You will get into a Ford vs Chevy discussion when asking which glue to use for rib building. The two glues most often used, and proven in many hours of Legal Eagle flying, are T-88 epoxy and Titebond III. I am using T-88 for all my wood joints. Also look through the Builder's Logs section of this forum. Chuck In Indiana has a lot of good info in his.

T-88 sounds good to me, then. And I got the vw engine pdf.
Leonard Milholland's videos show him using glue in a lot of places.
I'll see if I can find Chuck in Indiana in the Builders Logs.
Thanks.

T-88 is a two part epoxy glue and like any other chemical some people have allergic reactions to them. If you could be exposed to some mixed ready to use T-88 to see your reaction it might save you some money and grief later on. However, as I'm typing this I'm thinking you'll know if your allergic to T-88 by the time you're done with your first rib

Above post is good advice. Even if you are not allergic to epoxy, it is always a good idea to wear latex, vinyl, or nitrile gloves when working with the stuff. 91% alcohol is a good solvent for epoxy before it has set.

I attended a workshop on working with composites at OSH one year. The first point they made was your immune system is like a bag you carry around with you. You do not know how big the bag is. Allergens accumulate in this bag. Once the bag is full of a certain allergen you will henceforth have an allergic response to it for the rest of your life.
When I was younger I did not have a histamine response to poison ivy... Now I do. I am a believer now.
In other words, we are all allergic to epoxy and poison ivy among many other things. The sooner you decide you want to start breaking out in hives from them the more you can expose yourself to them...
Needless to say, follow the instructions on the label to the letter or you will be sorry. (end of sermon)
