GSC Props
« on: July 02, 2022, 10:36:19 AM »
Is anyone running a GSC prop on their engine? I would like to know how it performs and what diameter/pitch you are using. Performance Props is quoting 12-14 months and Culver 2-4 months lead time. GSC is lower cost and much quicker availability.

Have you tried Ed Sterba? He's been building Vdub props forever, does nice work.

I am running a Sterba 54Dx22P on my 37hp test stand engine now. It is a very nice prop. A friend of mine just tried to order one and was told that Ed was no longer making props. With the tremendously long lead times for Performance & Culver we are looking into GSC as an alternate.

Wow. I must have gotten the prop for the Verner just in the nick of time.

Don't know when Ed decided to stop. He made my prop in June of 2021. I'm making a prop copier machine so I can make duplicates of mine. I don't know how he adds the leading edge polyurethane so my copies will just be all wood.

Chuck, there are a lot of prop copier designs out there. The one I'm building looks crude but should work fine as long as all dimensions are correct. I bought the plans from Copycarver.com and bought the parts from various sources. YouTube video is: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6SJaEqry924&list=PLyq1IJWU1_1pV7y8wbcIFxdTcxmsUPvdJ  The metal parts cost me $150, all new. I already had the 3/4" ply & the routers.

Pretty crude but it gets the job done.  :) I was thinking ground Thompson shafting and linear bearings, but that works.. I had visions of making a prop or two a few years ago, but I think I'm over it.
Thanks!
