This Eagle is LEGAL
« on: July 13, 2024, 07:30:22 AM »
The Flyin' Yankee is finished!

All I have to do is add fuel and oil, calibrate the throttle and carbs, find a rabbits foot, then do the sign of the cross!

And it makes weight.

Yup, Latex paint.

I think I bought Behr Premium exterior latex from Home Depot. It's very flexible and forgivable. I'm sure other brands will do as long as it's premium.
First I used Glidden Exterior primer watered down to 80%. It was put on in 6 thin coats with a sponge brush. The paint can't bond to the fabric so the watered down primer is essentially pushed through the fabric and then slowly built up to encase the threads.

Malcom Morrison did some videos on how to use latex for aircraft. I also sat through his seminar at Airventure a few years ago.

That's fearsome looking!  And, I like the name - all of our Eagles deserve a name.

253lbs.

I made the seat cushions removable (22oz.) The battery (30oz.) isn't required for flight and is removable. The dashboard (32oz.) isn't required for flight and is removable. I did that just in case it didn't make weight with all the extras installed. But even with everything left in place, the plane weighed 253 pounds. This thing is legal and I have a clean conscience.

Every single piece of this airplane I touched I considered how to make lighter without reducing safety.
