Winter Project '24/25 - Intro & History

Greeting all you Eagler's & wannbe's (like me).
I hail from the PNW (Washington State to me more precise).  Have been a licensed pilot since '79 with almost all of my hours in the area of recreation and skills development.  Seems the older I get (I'm still a young man) the less destination flying I do and the more sightseeing / Sanity centered my missions have become.  I also find myself just enjoying the maintenance side of things more.  Does this sound familiar to anyone else on the forum?  I find that living just North of KPDX that the flying wx is not so great from November to March.  So this is the time I spend doing maintenance, tinkering and building.  My last project was the restoration of a Sonex-A.  Took a few years with setbacks and learning curve.  I've really come to appreciate the brand.  What the Sonex lacks though is forward visibility.  I find that if I don't have a project I'll likely break something so that I can fix it (AKA - making improvements).  Since the two birds in my hangar are about as good as they can be (there is always room for more changes mind you) I thought another small outlet was in order.  So I started looking at the lite stuff.  First I was attracted to the Afford-a-Plane (A-plane as some call it) then to the basic LE and the Bandlands Aircraft ($$$).  But it was when I saw and heard the Verner 3V that I knew what direction I'd go.

One of the forum member half a day drive from here offered to let me continue a project that has lost momentum.  So I have a head-start on the build with many items (ribs etc) built.  What I lack most of is understanding of the plans and processes.  Since this is a "Winter project" I'll have time to do some arm-chair building and figure things out.

I've found that as I uh.. mature  I couldn't care less about going places in an airplane, too. I've BTDT, have several T shirts.  The Legal Eagle fills the bill for those dawn and dusk patrols, and the Verner gives you something to do. I'm building a Pietenpol now because my wife missses it.
I should mention that there are flyers and there are fixers. Very few aircraft mechanics fly.. the flyer sits there above the clouds thinking, "what could possibly go wrong?"  The fixer sits there counting the ways..

Thanks Chuck for the post.  I'm in a quandry.  I'm both a Flyer & Fixer & Teacher.  So when I do go up I know what all can go wrong.  Don't have to wonder too much.  Perhaps that's why I stay close to home and fly with more altitude than is required ;-)

So I finally decided on an avatar and I think airplane (vehicle technically) side art.  This (avatar) is an image of a ring my dad gave me years ago.  So it's more of a sentimental thing than anything else.  I've always mused on the large arrow feathers.  Recently it dawned on my that those would be what's called a flu-flu. 

"A flu-flu arrow is a type of arrow specifically designed to travel a short distance."  That's a good description of the LE.  So I hope to either turn this image into a logo or use a flu-flu arrow image.
