Double Eagle Fuselage Drawings
« on: January 05, 2025, 10:43:42 AM »
I'm having trouble interpreting the drawings in the region of fuselage frame #2.  On sheet #1 of the plans, it appears that the top half of frame #2 is tipped to the rear by 1.0 inch measured at the top.  Then, it is unclear from the drawing whether the lower portion of that frame is perpendicular to the horizontal portion of the fuselage between frames 2 and 3 or if it is also tipped rearward.  I can't figure out a reason for tilting that frame but have to believe that there must be something behind the idea.  The drawing is very unclear about this.

Dwg 1 of my DE plans show most all horizontal dimensions reverenced from the tail post (0").  The Sta 2 cluster on the bottom of the fuselage is at 141".  The cluster just above it, at the instrument panel area, is at 142" (which is 1" forward from the bottom cluster). There is a note "SEE 4" pointing at a tube from the lowest cluster to the instrument panel area cluster.  The top of this tube is 1" forward of the bottom of the tube.  So, it is not perpendicular.  (Personally, I don't know why that is the case, should be no problem if perpendicular.  I suspect that the prototype fuselage was built, then measurements were made for the drawing).  Finally, the top cluster, where the wing front attachment is, is shown as 140".  Note - my drawings are dated "CORRECTD - 8-04 LEM".

That's how I interpret the drawing but I don't see the reason for sort of "folding" the station #2 frome.  I suppose you could argue that tipping the bottom half of it forward an inch gives a little bit of extra clearance for climbing into the plane.  Then you might also argue that tipping the top half of the frame rearward to achieve the dimension shown does seem to put the forward wing attachment right on top of that frame instead of possibly being off-set from the frame.  If I understand the drawings, the forward wing attachment is what puts the wings in the correct fore-aft location while the rear attachment point is allowed to sort of float.  If I have any complaint about the plans for this plane, it is that there is no explanation as to why things were done in a little bit strange manner sometimes.  Thanks for the input by the way!
