OK, so it can be pretty hard to find a used OEM case in good condition. New case$ are available. On Steve Kiblingers website he mentions his new case was no good due to some change in the center main.
Steve, or anyone else. What exactly is the problem? What did you have to do to use the new case? Does the problem only apply to the Milholland conversion? Is it a problem for the Hummel/Great plains style conversion?

Here's the deal:
Vw calls the main bearing at the flywheel end #1

Leonard says take the Vw thrust bearing for #1 and use it on main bearing saddle #2

Hummel & others use the Vw main from #1 on saddle #3 to take the thrust

Saddle #2 will take the main bearing from #1 on German cases - it fits on (and down the side of the saddle)

The after market Brazillian cases are not machined on the sides of the #2 saddle and I was unable to find anyone that would do the case machining... I installed my thrust bearing on saddle #3 with some machining on the crank throw and the steel oil pump driving gear (Like Hummel and others do)

If you are evaluating a case for the Milholland plans thrust bearing location (there are other non German after market cases) take a throw-away #1 main bearing and see if will nest down on the #2 saddle...

I only use OEM cases and cranks, Type 4 tractor flywheel end...  One in four case that i find are usable, thats much cost and travel find engine cores, there are vw shops with these engines stored in containers, look for vw shops that specialist in buses, Vanagon, Westfalia.

oh on thrust bearings...

leave #1 there, put end play shims between crank and bearing(not standard bearing and flywheel flange)
then add second thrust bearing #3
 yes machining
  how come Leonard always right? DOH
btw #2 is split bearing, 1 & 3 are one piece.

How come Leonard is always right?  I had to laugh at that one. Wen I was beveling the top of the forward spar, Leonard calls for a 10 degree bevel. I measured closely and thought, no, it's more like 12 degrees, so that's what we put on the saw and made the cut. Then we checked the cut against the LE ribs and I thought Hmmmmmm. Needs another degree off, so that's what we put on the saw and made the cut. Checked the angle again. Just needed one more degree cut off to be perfect. Friggin Leonard....... ::)

Starting a search for a core engine to build as a full case, 1/2 VW.
Theodore, you seem to be well versed on the bug motors. What might you suggest I look for?  I have a line on a core, but I suspect it's a bug motor, and one post of yours sounds like I should look for a van motor.
What say you?

Bug motor (Type 1) is just fine if the case is in good condition. I needed my case cut for 92 mm cylinders, clearanced for a 78 mm crankshaft, and possibly align bored. I bought a used, full length Type 1 case with all the proper machine work already done from Scott Casler at Hummel Engines. Everything fits great.

If you have the funds, by new AS41 style case. You will get more horse power. Type 1 best engine for two cylinder use.
1 in 5 of the old engines i come across are good, buses and vanagons are often park more 'cause used as rv's, meaning less miles, the lucky find i came across had never been opened for rebuild and when i measured crank and journals, the wear was halfway to what vw would recommend R&R. Camshaft had noticeable wear, and heads were junk but that being replaced anyway, The hardest hurdle here is finding someone who can balance half ofa crank, guess i will ship to Casler.
 
I really would like to put reduction drive on half veewee engine, maybe too much weight yep.

Hmmmm, not very good percentage numbers, but at least there's a lot of Type 1 motors out there.

While we are looking at case videos, here is the best one I've found on doing the "Hoover Mods". These mods are an option on your engine, but I grooved my lifters and opened up the groove behind the center cam bearing so more oil was available to the non-feed side of the case. I'll probably groove my rockers & rocker shaft as shown for improved oil flow to the valve springs. I will not be drilling the passageway between the center cam bearing and the prop end cam bearing.
