Jury Struts
« on: March 18, 2015, 04:41:48 PM »
In the photo gallery I see some of the ultralight Legal Eagles have jury struts and some do not. What is the criteria for adding the jury struts, is it optional, or recommended for larger engines? For the Far103 legal version can I leave them out of the build?

Thank you.

I left the jury struts off because I used the Carlson streamlined struts... MUCH stiffer than round tubing...

Hi Bob, can you tell us which Carlson struts you used, was it 2 large or large frt and small aft.

They also have an extra large but i think that would be for much heavier crafts

Thanks

I purchased the small tubing as it states (thru a typo) that it is "Stronger than but compared to 12.75 Dia x .065 wall 6061T6 tubing"... NOT 12.75 Dia.....1.275 Dia.!   WHICH is what I believe Leonard specs for the struts on the Legal Eagle....

I had Carlson cut two 126" sticks exactly in half (for shipping costs) then got a stick of 3/4"x 3/4" solid bar for attachments top and bottom... I put the Streamlined tube up close at the top with minimum sq. bar at top and had a piece of exposed bar at the attachment at the bottom. I fashioned a sleeve from thin aluminum to go over the bar at the bottom and it looks OK.... I have since found out that I could used 3/4" sq STEEL tube for the attachments T&B just as easily and saved a few OZ. in weight and $$ in costs... Take a look at it... DON'T use 3/4" Aluminum tube for the attachment...Use 4130 steel or the solid 6061-T6 bar!!!

I'll get some shots of my make-do....this weekend...

You can see some in my folder in the Yahoo Group...

they are not very detailed or specific, but if you know what to look for, it may give you an idea...
