UltraVair

UltraVair is now making the engine manual public domain and will no longer or offering parts or services.
They have my engine, but pledge to deliver it soon

I'll post photos as soon as I have my engine back. As you can imagine, I was getting a little anxious . Other than covering, mounting the engine is about all I have left to finish my XL. They told me it would be the most powerful Ultra Vair ever built.

Am following along this thread in a pondering mind set-

you said you were getting a little anxious?  But now your not anxious, even though they (the company) have said they are done supplying parts and support?
So this last engine is going to be their best effort with the most power ever built?  Just trying to put the pieces together.. Generally a company stopping, does not produce a better product at the end.   Maybe I miss read something along the line.

Scott, still in Missouri, just waiting on delivery of my engine, then headed north. I was there a couple of weeks ago turning on the water and such, and chasing the raccoons out of the attic.
For those of you wondering about UltraVair & my engine, the company has had some bad luck. The father suffered a stroke  and the sons took over to fill what orders they had. The sons are A&P's. They also suffered some bad luck of their own.
Today they stated publicly mine was their last engine, and they told me because it was their last engine and for the time I have had to wait, they wanted it to be their best. I am taking them at their word, they are all men of honor trying to do what they can to make the best of what they were dealt. I'm looking forward to getting my XL in the sky this summer.

Grdev, in that context, that sounds excellent…   As in all industries, it seems some great products have fallen through the cracks due to unforeseen circumstances.  This certainly could be one of them.  Who knows, with “the way/how to’s” made public, maybe someone will pick it up again with all the R & D done. Hope so.

Best of success.

Now that the plans are in the public arena maybe someone will offer the machining most of us can not perform on our own.  They are of the belief the Briggs engine may be the best way to go for a 35-40 HP engine. They are relative cheap, plentiful, rugged, light and come with electric start and an  alternator.  They didn't see a real future in the UltraVair from a business stand point, and it was the fathers plan to build the engines, the sons were just there to help dad out.

Well after well over a year, I got my Corvair project back from Ultra Vair. No it was not a complete running most powerful Ultra Vair ever built, it was a mess with broken and missing  parts. I will post photos later. For those familiar with VW jugs, check out the photos of what I was told was my engine. Today I was told that could not have possibly been my engine as it had VW cylinders. I'm in dispute currently with   Ultra Vair, on my missing parts I ordered with the package B offered by Ultra Vair,  I ordered from them over a year ago. Sure wished I had listen to Leonard and just built a VW

They switched out several of my parts without my knowledge or consent. Sent photos of some bad Corvair parts, after I told them I demanded my parts back, as an excuse. They threw away my pats.  I have no way of knowing if those were the parts I sent them or not and at this stage of the game their is a real trust issue for me The parts were my case , cam & crankshaft and matching heads, all from the same donor engine. . I know all my parts I furnished were the ones WW calls for in his manual, and now I have no idea if these are the correct parts, or even if they came from a110 hp engine. I will have to have all that checked out.  I was told the three photos I posted here were of my engine and it was all ready except the intake. They asked to use the engine during the breaking in to test the future EFI they were advertising on their web site ,and I agreed to let them do so. They told me they had my engine built and was shipped space available for $35.00. This is after I told them I would pay UPS shipping. Said they missed my email, didn't see it until after it was already shipped. I didn't see how they could possibly ship for 35 bucks and have insurance on the engine. Now remember this is supposed to be a fully functional turnkey engine. They had asked if they could use my engine for promotional purposes. that  and the many missed delivery dates is why they offered to build a complete engine, or at least that was my understanding, as there was never anything formally written up, just a gentleman's agreement. You can read the statements by Ultra Vair on the Yahoo web site announcing they were going out of business, that my engine was  their last, and what a nice guy I am. LOL.That all changed when I demanded an engine or my parts returned.  Now there were mutable scheduled ship dates that came and went with just about every excuse one could think of from a blown hard drive on CNC, disabled hand, floods in Texas ,fathers stroke and so on. This has been ongoing for well over a year. When I asked for a copy of the shipping papers or just the phone number of the shipper and they failed to produce either one I finally had enough and told them either produce the information or I would check out my legal options as I know longer believed a word they told me. . That is when things got really nasty on their part.  I have felt for several months now I was not being told the real story. I was told that the engine in the photos I posted here could not possibly be my engine as this was their experimental engine with VW cylinders. Although they swear there was an engine and they had the shipment stopped and returned because I demanded my parts I had sent and the B package parts they offered I had paid for in March of 2014. I personal don't believe there was ever a complete engine built with my name on it. Several of the parts from the package of machined pars I ordered and paid for were missing in the shipment I received. There were broken piston rings ,and  missing  cylinder/head bolts They did do some assembly for free, as they told me because they had  taken so long, but I will dissemble the cases and have everything checked. Everything they did may be perfectly fine, but at this stag of the game I want to do my own verification I have an airworthy  project.

FYI,

I knew I had seen Gil's photos but could not find them in the gallery...  So set out to hunt them down.  I did this by clicking on  "grdev", hit "show posts" hit "attachments".

The result of that endeavor is here: http://www.eaglersnest.com/forum/index.php?action=profile;area=showposts;sa=attach;u=85

I like to right click links and hit "open in new tab", that way I can close that tab when done and don't have to go back to find the place I left from.

Clicking on the filename items in the left column is a download,  better to click the message in the middle column.

Thanks Gil.

They say a picture is worth a thousand words. Look how the bolts coming out of the end of the crank shaft are at all different angles, not a one drilled straight. Look at all the holes, none are true, all egg shaped and look at the end of the camshaft slot and see if you see what I see and confirmed with dial caliber. Nothing I have measured matches my drawings.
Every hole I have measured so for is either egged shaped or oversized, including prop hub. I will be taking the entire package I was sent to a reputable machine shop and have them check all parts and machining against the manual drawings Not sure where this will end up, but I'm not a happy camper
