I was reading about the homebuilders and campers leaving early online as news from Airventure... the comment was that spectator days were here.  Is this typical or something that hit critical mass this year?

I don't think I have stayed for the closing ceremony ever...   

Most people that fly a plane in have the national weather forecast to contend with.    I think that is mostly what the deal is.

I have flown in a few times, but usually have camped at least 3 days before I even get to Oshkosh.  

I find 5 or 6 days camping is my limit,  so come Tuesday, I'm looking for a weather window to bug out...

I think you said it just right. Weather plays a hugh part on the decision as when to plan your exit and rightly so.
